Medical Assistant and Nursing Assistant Programs at Methodist College

Methodist College Launches New Certificate Programs

In response to the continued need for trained healthcare workers, Methodist College is launching two new certificate programs.

Beginning in the Spring 2017 semester, Methodist College will offer a Certificate in Medical Assistant program and a Certificate in Nursing Assistant program. Medical assistants work in medical offices and clinics performing a variety of needed tasks including setting up procedures, helping with procedures, taking basic medical assessment information from patients, and assisting the nursing staff as needed. Nursing Assistants provide hands-on health care to patients in medical settings taking vital signs, answering patient calls, helping with bathing, dressing and the basic activities of life. While CNAs can be found in hospitals, the majority work in nursing and residential care facilities.

“The move to our new campus has afforded us the opportunity to offer new programs that will help meet the demand for educated and qualified healthcare workers in Central Illinois,” said Dr. Kimberly Johnston, Methodist College president. “Medical and Nursing assistants are not only essential in providing quality care to patients, but play a critical role in clinic and extended care facilities in rounding out the medical care team.”

Johnston added that the Certificate in Medical Assistant curriculum was designed as a pathway to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Students who successfully complete the program may be able to continue their education in the Nursing program as some of the courses may transfer.

Changes in the healthcare industry have also increased the demand for medical assistants. With the move to provide more care in ambulatory settings continues, the demand for certified medical assistants to join medical practices will increase.

“We want our staff to practice to the full extent of their education and training,” said Abby Ault, Clinic Administrator at UnityPoint Clinic and a Methodist College alumnus. “As we maximize our nursing staff, the need for medical assistants will rise.”

Students who successfully complete the Medical Assistant program, may be eligible for certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants or the National Healthcareer Association. Students who successfully complete the Nursing Assistant program will be eligible to sit for the Illinois state exam.
