Registration Open for Methodist College Summer Camp for Middle School Students

Methodist College is once again offering the Learn and Serve Camp to middle school students in grades 5th – 9th. Learn and Serve camp for grades 5th – 7th will take place June 18 – 22 and camp for grades 8th – 9th will be July 9 – 13. Learn and Serve camp is 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. each day. The camp offers optional before care from 7:45 – 9:00 a.m. and after care from 4:00 – 5:15 p.m. each day. Camp is $125 per attendee with the option to add daily lunches, participants are also welcome to bring their own lunch.

The camp will feature upper level Methodist College nursing students as camp leaders who will design and deliver the curriculum. Camp leaders will teach practical learning experiences in healthcare and healthy living in the morning and real-life service projects at community organizations in the afternoon. The service projects are directly related to the morning learning experience. One day, camp participants may learn about nutrition and then volunteer at the Midwest Food Bank. Another day, they might learn about aging and caring for others in need, followed by a visit to Heddington Oaks to interact with nursing home residents. Most importantly, camp participants will serve their community in a fun, educational environment alongside their college student counterparts.

Methodist College has a service learning component built into core curriculum for all students. Service Learning provides a learning strategy that incorporates meaningful community service.  This summer course for Methodist College students allows them to plan service learning projects within a set of guidelines provided by the instructor. Activities outlined above are based upon last year’s camp schedule. The activities are subject to change, as students begin class and start planning activities.
