Behavioral Intervention Team

For the safety of our community, Methodist College established a Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) comprised of College Security, the College Counselor, Title IX Coordinator, and several staff members whose goal is the detection and prevention of violence on campus. Anyone who knows of (or has information about) a person who may be planning or is at risk of engaging in violence, who has planned a violent act, or who may be the intended victim of a violent act should click the REPORT A CONCERN button below, and the BIT will engage in an assessment and intervention of the situation/person of concern.

For immediate threats or the witnessing of violence, the BIT encourages students and staff to call 911 then alert Campus Security.

The BIT assessment allows the team to review and respond to students, employees, and others who may pose a danger to themselves or others on campus, and to distinguish those behaviors between:

  1. Concerning Behaviors- such as those who may simply be struggling, depressed, anxious, irritable, or those whose behavior may be unusual but not threatening or distressed

  1. Immediate/Emergent Behaviors- such as threatening online postings, suicidal ideation, self-injurious behavior, having a gun on campus, sexual violence or harassment, aggressive and/or threatening actions/words to students, staff, or faculty

The assessment will include a review of college policy and Title IX laws such as dating violence, domestic violence, hostile environment harassment, quid pro quo harassment, sexual assault, stalking, and retaliation.

The Behavioral Intervention Team’s core responsibility is to respond appropriately to concerns expressed about behaviors exhibited by anyone—students, employees, residents, visitors, and others—before a critical incident so that the campus remains a safe, secure, and collegial working and learning environment.
